Top 5 for the letter H

1. HBONOW (Free w/in-app purchase)

All of HBO's content, past and present.  Tons of the latest movies and their hit TV shows like Game of Thrones.  No Live stream, but its not too big a deal since all they show is their tv shows and movies.  They also update the tv show when that same show is being shown on cable.   Can also share with up to 2 people I believe.

2. Hulu (Free w/in-app purchase)

Hulu has great tv show content from all the major networks.  You get the latest tv shows pretty soon after they air.  All on demand.

3. Hardwood Spades ($.99)

Play Spades with people from all over the internet.  Design your avatar.  Different styles of spades and there are leaderboards to find out where you rank.  Pretty fun game if you love card games.  The graphics are fun as well.

4. Hexsweep ($4.99)

This game reminds of a game I use to play called Extreme-G.  You have to react fast to the environment around you and catch the speed boosts without hitting the blockers.  It doesn't have a lasting impression, but its still pretty cool game on the TV.

5. Hue TV ($1.99)

Control your Hue lights from your TV.  I am not sure if this will be better than using your phone, but its seems to be worth a shot.

Top 5 for the letter F

1. FOXNOW (Free)

Fox's content.  You will need a cable subscription, but there is a lot of good shows.  The on demand is a day behind which blows.  There is also no Live TV to it, but it is still worth having.

2. FXNOW (Free)

Really good shows on FXNOW.  They make quality programming, so worth getting the app.  You will need a cable subscriber.   No Live TV and the on demand comes in a day later.

3. Fight Network (Free)

Dedicated to complete coverage of combat sports.  There is fight news and analysis as well as reality series and documentaries.  Around the world news coverage of kickboxing, boxing, martial arts, wrestling and more.

4. free classic movies (Free)

Access to a ton of classic movies for free.  They have to be in the public domain, but the app is very easy to navigate and they have a great selection.

A free yoga app. Just has video yoga sessions for morning and afternoon.

Not much for this letter yet.  I was pushing it trying to get a top 5, but there is no point wasting time downloading something that just isn't worth the mention.

1. Earthlapse TV ($2.99)

So, if you do a search for Fireplace on the Apple TV, you will get like 20+ apps that just show videos of fireplaces.  It's totally odd why there would be so many people making that type of app, mainly because the supply doesn't seem to support the demand.  Anyways, the function they perform is a moving photograph, or better yet a cinemagraph.  Earthlapse TV is that type of app, but it shows something cool and unique...which is ISS footage of the Earth from above.  Great looking city light scenes, weather formations, auroras.  Just really interesting stuff.

2. ESPN (Free)

Live Video and on demand content from ESPN of every sport they broadcast.  Also has ESPN 2, ESPN 3, ESPNU, and SEC networks content.

3. EWTN (Free w/ in-app purchases)

A pretty big name in Catholic TV.  You get Live TV and radio streams as well as on demand content.

   Lots of game goodies today!

1. Dungeon Quest (Free w/ in-app purchases)

The first true RPG for the Apple TV.  I am a big fan of RPG's, so I played this as soon as I saw it.  Well, its a bit lackluster on fun, but considering you don't have much choice as to the platform it is on, at least someone is attempting it.  The developers are very engaged and plan to make it better day by day, which is uplifting.  The graphics are pretty poor compared to RPG's today.  Reminiscent of N64 if not worst.  It's not very challenging either.  You basically just swing a big stick and collect stuff to make your guy stronger.  But its fun to find rare items...makes you feel special!  The interface is a big clunky too, its hard to know what your selected on when using the menus.

2. Defense TV (Free)

If you like to watch government videos about new military programs and watch new artillery tests and just anything military you will get a kick out of this stuff.  There are daily press briefings with heads of departments talking their stuff.  All sorts of shows.  I don't really get into this stuff, but I thought it was neat when I found it.  Kind of makes you feel like the government is doing what it can to show you what they are working on.

3. Disney Infinity Edition 3.0 (Free w/ in-app purchases)

Disney came out with their famous platform game series Infinity for the Apple TV.  Its best played when you buy the action pack they sell, which consists of real life toy figures.  Owning the character lets you play the character in the game.  The game is definitely geared to the younger audience.  This is proven by the simplicity of the game; everything is easy to kill and the game pretty much tells you what to do.  The boss fights get a little bit challenging, but not much.  The graphics look great!  And tons of fun Star Wars scenes that you get to play.  All of this is in 3rd person perspective, like typical 3D mario games.

4. decyde (Free)

A challenge to Siri's search function.  If you search through the app it will let you know what app the tv show or movie is in.  Currently it has more than what Siri looks through.  The other functionality the app does is it helps you decide what to watch when 2 or more people are saying what to watch.  Everyone picks a genre or name of movie and when it collects all that info it gives the best movie to watch for the group.

5. Dynamite Jack ($9.99)

A game that has a captured space explorer looking for a way out of the alien mining camp.  You use bombs to either blow holes in walls or get rid of watchmen.  It's from a birds eye perspective, so you get an overview of your objectives.  The graphics are basically Nintendo with some fresh lighting effects.  Hours of fun, and if you like puzzles then this game is definitely something worth getting.

There are a buttload of apps for the letter C.  A lot of good ones as well.  I could have easily made it 10, but i am keeping this to only 5 a day, which might not happen with some letters.  It's kind of like scrabble ya know.

1. Crackle (Free)

A FREE movie/TV show app.  What is not to love about that.  A must have.  I would say its only downfall is that most of the stuff is at least 4 years old, but there is a lot of good stuff that old.  They also have some of their own content; Comedians in Cars getting Coffee is the highlight for me.

2. Crossy Road (Free w/ in-app purchases)

Although the game is super basic and gets old after about 5 minutes, it is still a lot of fun for that first 5 minutes.  The graphics are as simple as Nintendo, but that doesn't really matter.  What is most fun is playing 2 player and knocking you opponent into a train or car; it makes for a good laugh.

3. Comedy Central (Free)

Of course it requires a cable subscription, the app is everything Comedy Central has to offer.  TV shows, Stand-up, short form stuff like Drunk History.  No Live component, but the best TV app for Comedy there is.  Comedy Central has great programming, which is one reason I put it in the top 5.

4. CBS (Free w/ in-app purchase)

This is the only other app besides HBO to sell a service without having to need a cable subscription.  The price is way to much ($6.99), its still showing what the future of TV probably will turn into.  Hopefully Apple will let the buyer bundle 10, 20, 30 different channels for a cheaper price..but let the buyer pick the channels he or she wants.  That way every app isn't 7 bucks, which then becomes more expensive than cable.  There is Live TV option as well, but only for certain areas.  The only stinker is the on demand stuff comes a day later...LAME!

5. Channels ($14.99)

This is an app that accesses your local HomeRunHD DVR box wirelessly and stream from the content you have recorded on it as well as stream your cable stream live.  This puts everything in one place; the apple tv.  No need to use the clunky UI of your cable provider, no need to use their DVR box you pay 10 bucks a month for.  Although its not a perfect solution to TV, it sure puts more space between you and the horrible cable companies.  I champion this app only because of that.  The cost of the app is kind of retarded....and the UI isn't actually much better.  HAHA, but an A for trying!

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

Today's app are pretty lackluster.  Keep in mind that the developer community for the Apple TV is still small and its mainly people porting their iPad games to the TV, as well as the TV apps.

1. Beach Buggy Racing

The game is very reminiscent of Mario Kart, but not as awesome.  Still a fun game though.  You play against people online, you shoot them with items, and you can even 4 screen with your buddies (one needs to be on an iPhone I believe).  The graphics are similar to Nintendo 64...which isn't saying much at all.  But it translates well to the big screen as far as fun factor.  The levels are pretty cool looking as well, very fun tracks.

2. Beachbody On Demand

Some of the best workouts made are available by subscription.  P90X and Insanity.  Tons of hours of workouts so your never board.  It's a great price compared to a gym membership ($14.99 a month).  Videos are great quality, they aren't just youtube rips like most of the workout video apps.

3. BACKR Guitar Backing Tracks

Thousands of songs to practice guitar too.  I would be weary of getting this app as I believe most the videos are straight from youtube.  So all the developer did for this App was just put them together in a nice littler package for you.  I like the idea though and its relatively cheap.  You get to favorite the videos you like.  Needs more songs though, a thousand is just not enough...I have more in my iTunes Library!

4. Battle Supremacy: Evolution

A decent vehicle tank destruction game...with drones and airplanes too.  The graphics are close to a PS3 level, the only thing holding it back is the lack of vertices each object can have so things tend to look more blocky then normal.  This is a game that is half visual as it is half engaging.  You mainly just blow up stuff, which can be fun.  It's got a great land to air and then back to land environment, fully immersive and no lag between the two.  There is a multiplayer aspect to it which has capture the base and team death match; good modes to have.  You will most definitely want to use the MFI controller for this game; which is one the best games to have incorporated the 3rd party controllers.

5. Bloomberg TV

Bloomberg has also incorporated Live TV with on demand content.  If a content provider does this with their app, more than likely I will put it on my top 5 list for the day.  This is something every cable subscriber wants, to be able to jump to a live stream.  Bloomberg has made that audience happy.  But, you will want to be into financial news from around the world...which can be pretty boring most the time.
